Mr. Meddleboots shook his head sadly before he answered.

“I’m afraid your ship has been stolen by … monkey-crabs.”

“Oh, blow me pants down!” yelled the pirate. “Not monkey-crabs!”

Mr. Meddleboots nodded grimly.

“The worst kind of ship stealer there is! The very worst kind!” The pirate’s eyes rolled.

“But I’m sure these earwigs will help you to get it back,” said Mr. Meddleboots. Then he leaned forward and whispered, “Remember to beware of the whisper word.” The pirate nodded.

“And now,” said Mr. Meddleboots, “I must be off. I’m knitting a raincoat for a dolphin.”

The pirate pushed Mr. Meddleboots backward off the step.

“Good-bye, Mr. Meddleboots,” he cried as the engine roared. “See you next time.”

The bus took off with a screech.
